We had the biggest Christmas ever at the Searle family.  Here is all the presents that we got.  About 1/2 are from family or neighbors, and other are from/for our little family.

Normally we only spend ~ $35 bucks on each other, but we spent a bit more, and got some nice stuff for everyone.

We got the boys both some nice skateboards, from Zumiez, one of the best places to get a board.  They have great service their too.  They boys have been enjoying their boards for several weeks now.  Benjamin was trying to pull off a funny face, so don’t think he looks like that now.  Nathan went skiing last week, and has fallen in love with thermals, and wears them as pajamas now.

Both boys got new helmets to use while skating.  Benjamin was really happy to get a green one.

We also got them some miscellaneous science and other toys, some magnet games, and legos, and books.

Erika got a iPod, and I got some clothes and shoes.  ( to replace (maybe) my still in use, 11 year old mission shoes ).

Even with us going big with the presents this year, we still managed to get all of the boxes, wrapping paper and other packing material to all fit into one box, size 12 x 10 x 15.  A software vendor actually shipped me a smoked turkey this year.  It was really good, and tasty.

We had the best day ever yesterday, we all played PS3 all day and only burned about 11 calories the entire day.  We all love to play the Pixel Junk Monsters game.  It is really fun, addictive, and simple to play.  All you do is build and upgrade little towers that shoot monsters that are going to eat your little babies.

benbap1Benjamin was baptized on December 5th.  It was a cold snowy day.  Doesn’t he look so cute.

benbap3This is the best picture of Benjamin with myself. (Nathan cut part of my head off.)  This was a wonderful day.  He was confirmed on Sunday Dec. 6th.  I can’t believe how fast they grow up.  My (baby) is baptized.

Little Benny got baptized this morning.  It was a wonderful day for all, and even nice to see the family.  Pics to come.

We took 4 young men and their dates out on date night tonight.   We started by going out to dinner at the local Chili’s restaurant.  We all sat at a huge table, and talked for what seemed an hour before the food came.   We were all enjoying ourselves when some poor dad had to take his kid that was puking his guts out to the bathroom.  He was holding his hand in front of his face, and it just spread the projectile vomit all over the place.  It was wicked nasty, and did not help peoples appetites.

Then we went to Temple Square to see the Christmas lights.    It was wicked cold, and the wind was blowing too. There were definitely two distinct groups, one very quiet, and one not so quiet.   Erika and I enjoyed when we got to the lights and we could be by ourselves, and we loved the peace and quiet.

They all seemed to have fun.  And I had so much fun I fastened this knife out of paper, to hopefully put me out of my misery.  :)

Benford’s Law is a pretty amazing discovery.  It states that for real data, like statistical tables, numerical listing ( like addresses, populations, lengths of rivers, etc… ) and other groups of numbers, that we are not to expect a uniform distribution of leading digits.  For example, one would think that for a list of all river lengths, in any unit of measurement, that there would be relatively equal number of them that start with the number 1, 2, 3 and so forth, with each number having 1/9th the possibility of being the leading digit. However it is proven that the distribution looks more like this:

1 = 30.1%
2 = 17.6%
3  12.5%
4 = 9.6%
5 = 7.9%
6 = 6.6%
7 = 5.8%
8 = 5.1%
9 = 4.5%

I thought a good idea would be to see if this law holds true, for the file sizes found on my hard drive.  There is a good listing of number, found in the real world, and at first glance, I would think that there is an equal likelihood that all the numbers are represented equally as the leading digit.

Family found a used book store nearby that we had not seen before. We all have a great love for books, and for some reason an old book is more appealing than a new book. Either way, Benjamin and I found this algebra book from 1911, and bought it for $3 even. He wanted to ‘learn more math’ so we are going to go through it together. There are some interesting doodles, and a old school plastic rule inside.

One thing that I recently found out was that you can have your firefox browser do spell checking in a single line textbox.  I need for any poor speller, like myself.

Here are the steps:

1.  Open a new window / tab.

2.  In the address bar type ‘about:config’ ( without the quotes of course )

3.  Filter on the word ‘spell’

4.  Find ‘layout:spellcheckDefault’ line.

5.  Double click it and change the default to the number 2.

6.  Restart firefox and enjoy single line spell checking.  :)
